Hi, my name is Daniel. This is a blog of my 4th year software engineering project at The University of Sydney (ELEC4707).

The title of my project is Painting with the Wii. In short, this project involves integrating DirectX into a program designed for painting with a Wii remote (or Wiimote).

I will be continually updating this blog throughout the course of the project. Please check back reguarly for updates!

"Testing" the Wii

I am told that as part of my project, I will be conducting a usability study of the Nintendo Wii, and so I thought it would be best if I familiarised myself with its gaming / entertainment capacity (what it was predominately designed for).

The Wii is an extremely fun gaming console to play! The Wiimote creates a very interactive experience, and I am sure that its capabilities have not yet been fully utilized by the current selection of games.

I will be receiving the code and report for the existing painting prototype from my supervisor next Monday.

Connecting the Wii

This week I acquired a Nintendo Wii. I downloaded a program called BlueSoleil to enable me to connect the Wiimote to my laptop, since it is a Bluetooth device.

I then downloaded another program called GlovePIE, which facilitated interaction between my computer and the Wiimote (with the help of the Wii sensor bar). Using GlovePIE, I was able to use the Wiimote as a mouse for my computer (see video below).

I am still waiting on the code/report for the Wiimote painting prototype from my SIT supervisor.
